When I was about eight years old, I went around the neighborhood selling potholders I had made on the loom I had been lusting after and finally got. My fondest hope was that I would walk up to a house, and someone would open the door without my ringing the bell. They would have a smile on their face. And money in their hand. They would buy out my whole lot with nary a word spoken, such a gratifying fantasy for a super shy kid like me.
I ALMOST got that very wish.
