In the deep
Thoughts on thinking
It is very compelling for me to see someone praying or meditating. I always want to know what they’re thinking/feeling. But it is so still, so deeply personal and private, and the person involved in that most intimate of communions is so utterly unavailable to the outer world. Or should be, I suppose I should say. One hopes that there is somewhere where we might enjoy a little retreat from the slings and arrows. But today I’d like to share with you what occurred during my meditation. (I think meditation purists might like me to call it my “so-called” meditation, but as Henry James said, “We work in the dark, we do what we can, we give what we have.”)
