I will confess that it's only this past year that I've learned to really appreciate poetry. I took a course that my friend taught - she was a teacher once upon a time. She opened my eyes to the beauty of poetry for which I will be eternally grateful.

One question - the stones - do you just let them pile up? If yes, how many do you think there are? Interesting concept. I remember years ago Oprah suggested we write three (I think it was three - I stopped doing it long ago!) things we were grateful for each night. I'm living my life in gratitude. I wake up every day determined to live in joy - not to let small stuff interfere and bother me for too long. We are at that stage of life where we can't afford to spill ugly on our days - there are too few left!

Oh Elizabeth, I don’t think I have ever heard a loon, but here along the coast in San Diego, I see the huge flocks of brown pelicans flying by. They were almost extinct until DDT was banned, and now they go by every day. The first poem I read this morning was “daffodils” by Wordsworth. Now you have given me another poet to enjoy. My bedside book stack grows ever larger thanks to you!

And The Memory of Loons, makes a wonderful title for a novel and I can almost see the jacket. Your time at the summer camp brings all sorts of possible stories to mind. I would love to hear more about that time.

Nature is such a gift and all too often we don’t take the time to notice what’s all around us. It’s one of the reasons I love early morning and sitting outside with my coffee and listening and staring. I used to have a mourning dove that visited me for several years to have her babies in my hanging basket of pansies. I felt so honored… and I mourned when they left. I have always referred to them as just, morning doves, because that’s the only time I hear or see them. I miss them.

I loved the poem about the Tooth Fairy and will look for her book. I often read from Mary Oliver… such quiet beautiful words.

Have a wonderful day to all.

Our family camped in Canada more than in the States when our kids were growing up. We loved seeing and hearing loons, getting "Loonies" in change (Canadian money is so much more colorful). I started to collect loony items and still have them displayed with all the other Native art we love. As we now live in the woods of Western Washington, we see eagles frequently, another favorite. But the haunting notes of the loon's call will always bring back those magic Canadian summer evenings.

Loons!!! Nearly twenty-five years ago, my husband and I spent a week at our friends' summer place on Kezar Lake in Maine. We took a rowboat out after sunset one evening and saw an asylum of loons, dancing and singing in a circle. (I had to look up that collective term for a "group of loons!!") Specifics here: https://shop.adventurewithkeen.com/product/an-asylum-of-loons/

I love loons and, luckily, I live in Maine now so I have the opportunity to find them. I love the poem you shared and I’m off to buy her book. Have a wonderful weekend.

I am so blessed to live right on the lake in the summertime and not only hear the Loons but photograph them as well. I have been doing this for 30 years. I'm going to drop a stone in water so show my gratitude for them. The best listening is when they wake you up in the middle of the night and they talk and cry to each other....it's a forlorn and weary sound. Then they find each other on the big lake and all is quiet again. Thanks for reminding me of what I gift I receive each summer.

I live in New Hampshire and my daughter just visited. We saw the loon everyday near the house on the lake where she was staying. Her trip to see me was so special. When I read your story just now it made me smile because I was thinking of how magical times can be just because we get to share with loved ones.
